Iago

Iago is a name now synonymous with treachery and manipulation, from the villain in Shakespeare's *Othello* who destroys the protagonist through deceit while maintaining a facade of loyalty.

To call someone an Iago is to accuse them of being a false friend whose malice hides behind apparent trustworthiness: He played Iago to his business partner for years before the betrayal.
