exchequer
Government money vault
An exchequer is a national or royal treasury, or the government department responsible for managing public revenue and expenditure.
The term derives from the checkered cloth once used for counting money.
In general use, exchequer can refer humorously to one's personal finances: My exchequer won't survive another vacation. (Capitalized Exchequer refers specifically to British government finance.)
