Norman Bates
Norman Bates is the fictional murderer in Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 film *Psycho*, a mild-mannered motel keeper with a pathological attachment to his dead mother.
The character has become shorthand for someone whose quiet exterior conceals violent instability: He seemed normal enough, but the neighbors always said he gave off Norman Bates vibes.
