Akkadian

Ancient Mesopotamian tongue

Akkadian is an ancient Semitic language spoken in Mesopotamia, the earliest known member of its language family with written records.

It was the lingua franca of the ancient Near East for centuries, preserved on clay tablets in cuneiform script.

The term also refers to the people and empire centered on the city of Akkad around 2300 BCE: Akkadian inscriptions, the Akkadian Empire.
