Franz Joseph I
Austro-Hungarian longtime ruler
Franz Joseph I was Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary from 1848 to 1916—one of the longest reigns in European history.
His rule saw the transformation of the Austrian Empire into the Austro-Hungarian dual monarchy (1867) and ended amid World War I.
His rigid conservatism and personal tragedies, including the assassination of his wife Elisabeth and the suicide of his son Rudolf, made him a symbol of the fading Habsburg era.
