M*A*S*H

Wartime surgical unit

M*A*S*H is an acronym for Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, a military medical unit designed to provide emergency care close to combat zones.

The term gained widespread recognition through the 1970 film and especially the long-running television series (1972–1983), which depicted Army surgeons during the Korean War treating battlefield casualties while coping through dark humor.

The show's blend of comedy and antiwar sentiment made M*A*S*H cultural shorthand for gallows humor in desperate circumstances.
