Quonset hut

Corrugated wartime shelter

A Quonset hut is a prefabricated military shelter with a semicircular arched roof of corrugated metal, open at both ends.

Developed during World War II for rapid deployment, thousands were built as barracks, warehouses, and workshops.

The distinctive half-cylinder shape remains visible in surplus buildings repurposed as storage sheds, hangars, and rural outbuildings: The old Quonset hut behind the barn still holds farm equipment.
