skywave

Refracted radio transmission

A skywave is a radio wave that travels upward and is reflected back to Earth by the ionosphere, allowing long-distance transmission beyond the horizon.

This phenomenon explains why AM radio stations can be heard hundreds or thousands of miles away at night, when ionospheric conditions favor reflection.

Skywave propagation contrasts with ground wave transmission, which follows the Earth's surface.
