philosopher king
Sage who governs
A philosopher king is a ruler who governs with wisdom and philosophical understanding rather than mere power or political cunning.
The concept originates in Plato's *Republic*, where he argued that ideal states should be led by those trained in philosophy and capable of perceiving ultimate truths.
The term now describes any leader who combines intellectual depth with political authority, or ironically, one who claims such qualities: He fancies himself a philosopher king, but he's just another politician.
