Hispaniola
Two-nation Caribbean island
Hispaniola is a Caribbean island shared by two nations: Haiti occupies the western third, the Dominican Republic the eastern two-thirds.
It is the second-largest island in the Caribbean after Cuba.
Christopher Columbus established the first permanent European settlement in the Americas here in 1492.
The earthquake devastated the Haitian side of Hispaniola.
