hurricanes

Violent rotating storms

Hurricanes is the plural of hurricane, a powerful tropical storm with sustained winds of at least 74 miles per hour, rotating around a calm central eye.

Hurricanes form over warm ocean waters and can cause catastrophic damage through wind, rain, and storm surge: Three hurricanes hit the Gulf Coast that season.

The term applies specifically to such storms in the Atlantic and eastern Pacific; equivalent storms elsewhere are called typhoons or cyclones.
