Barabbas

Freed instead of

Barabbas is a figure from the New Testament, the prisoner whom Pontius Pilate released instead of Jesus when given the choice by the crowd.

The name has become shorthand for someone chosen over a worthier person, or for the guilty party who goes free while the innocent suffers: They picked him over me—I felt like Jesus watching Barabbas walk.
