Fuhrer

German supreme commander

Führer is German for leader or guide.

The word is now inseparable from Adolf Hitler, who styled himself Führer of Nazi Germany.

In English, it designates Hitler specifically or characterizes someone as an authoritarian dictator: The office manager acts like a little führer.

The spelling Fuhrer appears in English contexts without the umlaut.
