fuehrer

German totalitarian title

Fuehrer is an alternative spelling of führer, the German word for leader.

In English, it refers almost exclusively to Adolf Hitler as dictator of Nazi Germany from 1933 to 1945: The Fuehrer demanded absolute loyalty.

The spelling without the umlaut appears in older English texts and contexts where special characters are unavailable.

Extended use describes any tyrannical or dictatorial leader. (Also spelled Fuehrer when capitalized, or führer.)
