Francis Drake

Golden Hind captain

Francis Drake was an English sea captain and privateer of the sixteenth century, the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe.

He conducted raids on Spanish ships and ports in the Americas and played a prominent role in defeating the Spanish Armada in 1588.

Queen Elizabeth I knighted him aboard his ship, the Golden Hind.

To the Spanish, he was a pirate; to the English, a national hero.
