Hernán Cortés
Hernán Cortés was a Spanish conquistador who led the expedition that conquered the Aztec Empire in 1519–1521, claiming Mexico for Spain.
His name appears in historical discussions of colonialism, indigenous resistance, and the fall of Tenochtitlan: Cortés burned his ships to prevent retreat.
The conquest he led devastated native populations through warfare and disease.
