Ferdinand Magellan

Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who led the first expedition to circumnavigate the Earth, though he died before completing the voyage.

Sailing under the Spanish flag in 1519, he discovered the strait at South America's southern tip that now bears his name.

He was killed in the Philippines in 1521; his crew finished the journey.
