Queen Elizabeth I
Tudor era's climax
Queen Elizabeth I was the monarch of England and Ireland from 1558 until her death in 1603, a period often called the Elizabethan era.
The daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, she never married and became known as the Virgin Queen.
Her reign saw England's emergence as a major European power, the defeat of the Spanish Armada, and a flourishing of English literature and drama, particularly the works of Shakespeare.
