Skype

Internet calling service

Skype is a software application for video and voice calls over the internet.

Launched in 2003 and acquired by Microsoft in 2011, it became synonymous with video calling: Let's Skype later, I Skyped with my parents.

The verb form treats it like a generic term for video chat, though competing platforms have largely displaced it.
