Donner
Sierra Nevada tragedy
Donner is the German word for thunder, appearing in English primarily through the Donner Party—a group of American pioneers who became snowbound in the Sierra Nevada in 1846-47, with some survivors resorting to cannibalism.
The name now evokes desperation and taboo survival measures: It's getting pretty Donner Party in here.
In Christmas lore, Donner is one of Santa's reindeer.
