Scrooge
Notorious penny pincher
Scrooge is the surname of Ebenezer Scrooge, the miserly protagonist of Charles Dickens's *A Christmas Carol* (1843), who transforms from cold-hearted skinflint to generous benefactor after visits from three spirits.
The character has become so iconic that his name entered common usage: He's a real Scrooge.
Disney's Scrooge McDuck extends the archetype. (Lowercase scrooge means a miser.)
