Blitzen is one of Santa Claus's reindeer, from the poem "A Visit from St.
Nicholas" (1823).
The name comes from German for lightning.
Blitzen pairs with Donner (thunder) in the familiar list: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Blitzen.
Outside the Christmas context, blitzen appears in blitzed, meaning drunk or overwhelmed.
