Deepwater Horizon
Gulf oil disaster
Deepwater Horizon was an offshore oil drilling rig that exploded in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010, killing eleven workers and causing the largest marine oil spill in history.
The name now stands for that disaster and its aftermath—massive environmental damage, regulatory failures, and billions in cleanup costs and settlements.
The Deepwater Horizon spill transformed how we think about offshore drilling risks.
