Baal
Ancient Semitic deity
Baal was a Canaanite fertility and storm god whose worship is condemned throughout the Hebrew Bible.
The Israelites' prophets railed against Baal worship as idolatry, making the name synonymous with false gods and pagan religion.
Baal appears in compound place names like Baal-peor and in the demon name Beelzebub, derived from "Baal-zebub" (lord of flies). (Lowercase baal means any false god.)
