Proto-Sinaitic

Ancient Semitic script

Proto-Sinaitic refers to an ancient script found in the Sinai Peninsula, dating to roughly 1800 BCE.

It represents an early stage in the development of alphabetic writing, bridging Egyptian hieroglyphics and the Phoenician alphabet that eventually gave rise to Greek, Latin, and most modern Western scripts.

The term also describes the hypothetical language this script recorded.
