graven images
Forbidden sculpted deities
Graven images are idols or objects of worship carved from wood, stone, or metal.
The phrase comes from biblical prohibitions against making representations of God or false gods: Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.
In modern use, it appears almost exclusively in religious contexts or allusions to the Ten Commandments.
