Moabite

Ancient Jordanian ancestor

A Moabite is a person from Moab, an ancient kingdom east of the Dead Sea in what is now Jordan.

The Moabites appear throughout the Hebrew Bible as neighbors and frequent adversaries of the Israelites, though Ruth—ancestor of King David—was a Moabite.

The term also describes the Semitic language spoken there: a Moabite inscription.
