CYP2D6
Liver enzyme variant
CYP2D6 is a liver enzyme that metabolizes roughly a quarter of all prescription drugs, including many antidepressants, opioids, and heart medications.
Genetic variations in CYP2D6 cause people to metabolize these drugs at different rates—poor metabolizers may experience toxic buildup, while ultra-rapid metabolizers may get no therapeutic effect from standard doses.
Pharmacogenetic testing for CYP2D6 status increasingly guides prescribing decisions.
