CYP enzymes
Drug-processing liver proteins
CYP enzymes are a family of proteins that metabolize drugs, toxins, and other foreign substances in the body.
Short for cytochrome P450 enzymes, they're concentrated in the liver and responsible for breaking down most medications.
Certain foods and drugs can inhibit or induce CYP enzymes, causing dangerous interactions: Grapefruit inhibits CYP3A4, increasing blood levels of many statins.
