inducer

Prompting force behind

An inducer is something that brings about or stimulates a process.

In biochemistry, an inducer is a molecule that triggers gene expression or enzyme production: Lactose acts as an inducer for the genes that metabolize it.

More generally, anything that prompts or causes an effect can be called an inducer: stress as an inducer of inflammation.
