Blackfriars

Monastic London neighborhood

Blackfriars is an area of central London, named for the black-robed Dominican friars who established a monastery there in the 13th century.

The name attaches to a bridge, a railway station, and the surrounding district: We crossed Blackfriars Bridge at sunset.

The Blackfriars Theatre was an important Elizabethan playhouse where Shakespeare's company performed.
