Battle-mad Norse warrior

A berserker is a warrior who fights with uncontrolled, trance-like fury.

The word comes from Old Norse legends of fighters who worked themselves into frenzied states before battle, supposedly impervious to pain.

Now berserker usually appears in fantasy games and fiction, or describes anyone who attacks with wild abandon: He went berserker on the punching bag.

The related phrase go berserk is more common in everyday speech.
