telnet
Text-based remote access
Telnet is a network protocol for remote terminal access, allowing users to connect to and control another computer over a network.
Before the web, it was a primary way to access remote systems: I'll telnet into the server to check the logs.
Now largely replaced by SSH for security reasons, though the verb persists: Can you telnet to port 25 to test the mail server?
