yardbird

Slang for prisoner

Yardbird is slang with two distinct meanings.

In military and prison contexts, it refers to someone assigned to menial outdoor work—cleaning yards, picking up trash: The new recruits were yardbirds for their first month.

In jazz, yardbird means a musician, especially a saxophonist, from Charlie "Yardbird" Parker's nickname.

A yardbird is also simply a chicken—a bird kept in the yard.
