coop

Cage for chickens

A coop is a small enclosure for poultry, especially chickens: We built a chicken coop in the backyard.

The word extends to any cramped or confining space: Their apartment felt like a coop.

To coop someone up is to confine them in a small space: The kids were cooped up inside all winter.

Separately, coop is short for cooperative—a jointly owned enterprise: a food coop, a housing coop.
