wild turkey

Native American gamebird

A wild turkey is the North American game bird from which domestic turkeys descend—larger and leaner than farm-raised birds, with iridescent bronze and black plumage.

Wild turkeys nearly went extinct in the early 20th century but have rebounded dramatically through conservation efforts.

Hunting them is a popular sport: He bagged a wild turkey on opening day. (Capitalized Wild Turkey is the bourbon brand.)
