parole

Early supervised release

Parole is the conditional release of a prisoner before their sentence ends.

The parolee must follow rules—regular check-ins, staying employed, avoiding certain people—or risk returning to prison: He was released on parole after serving eight years.

To parole someone is to grant this release.

In linguistics, parole refers to actual speech acts as opposed to the abstract language system.
