pullet

Immature female chicken

A pullet is a young hen, specifically one less than a year old that has begun laying eggs but hasn't yet gone through her first molt.

The term distinguishes these birds from chicks (too young to lay) and mature hens: The pullets started producing eggs last month.

Common in poultry farming and backyard chicken keeping.
