whiting

Powdered calcium carbonate

Whiting refers to two different things.

One is a white-fleshed fish of the cod family, common in European waters and valued as food: The whiting was lightly breaded and fried.

The other is powdered chalk used as a pigment, in polishing compounds, and in putty—named for its white color.
