codling
Immature sea catch
A codling is a young or small cod, the North Atlantic fish.
The word also names a variety of elongated cooking apple, harvested before fully ripe and used primarily for baking and sauce: codling and cream, codling moth—the latter being a pest whose larvae tunnel into apples.
Both senses share the diminutive suffix.
