codfish
Flaky white fish
A codfish is a cod—a large cold-water fish important to commercial fishing, especially in the North Atlantic.
The longer form appears in certain fixed expressions: codfish aristocracy (New England old money), sacred cod (the wooden carving in the Massachusetts State House).
Otherwise, cod is the standard term.
