ling

Fish or heather

Ling refers to two unrelated things in English.

One is a long-bodied fish related to cod, found in northern Atlantic waters and sometimes salted or dried for preservation.

The other is a low-growing evergreen shrub, another name for heather, common on moorlands: The hills were purple with ling.
