black-tailed deer

Pacific Coast cervid

A black-tailed deer is a subspecies of mule deer native to the Pacific coast of North America, from California to Alaska.

Named for its distinctive dark tail, it's smaller than other mule deer and prefers dense coastal forests: We spotted a black-tailed deer at the edge of the clearing.
