cranberry bog
Flooded harvest field
A cranberry bog is a low-lying wetland area cultivated for growing cranberries.
The berries thrive in acidic, peaty soil with access to fresh water, and bogs are flooded at harvest time so the buoyant fruit can be skimmed from the surface.
Cranberry bogs are concentrated in Massachusetts, Wisconsin, and the Pacific Northwest: We drove past cranberry bogs turning red in October.
