unweighting

Lessening the load

Unweighting is the act of reducing pressure or load on something, especially in skiing and cycling.

A skier unweights their skis momentarily to initiate a turn; a cyclist unweights the saddle when riding over rough terrain.

The term appears in physical therapy for exercises that reduce stress on joints: underwater treadmills allow unweighting during rehabilitation.
