plantation house
Southern agricultural estate
A plantation house is the main residence on a large agricultural estate, particularly the grand homes built by slaveholding landowners in the American South before the Civil War.
These houses—often columned, white, and set apart from slave quarters—evoke both architectural elegance and the brutal economy that built them.
Many survive as museums or event venues: They held their wedding at a restored plantation house.
