war elephants
Armored tusked cavalry
War elephants are elephants trained for combat, used in ancient and medieval warfare across Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa.
They served as living tanks—carrying archers or soldiers, breaking infantry lines, and terrifying enemies unfamiliar with them.
Armies from India, Persia, Carthage, and Southeast Asia deployed them: Hannibal famously crossed the Alps with war elephants.
Their effectiveness was mixed; panicked elephants could trample their own troops.
