messenger pigeons
Winged mail service
Messenger pigeons are homing pigeons trained to carry messages over long distances.
The birds return instinctively to their home loft, so a message attached to the leg travels one direction—from wherever the pigeon was released back to its base: The army used messenger pigeons to communicate from the front lines.
Also called carrier pigeons.
