gingiva
Teeth's soft base
Gingiva is the medical term for the gums—the firm pink tissue that surrounds the base of the teeth and covers the jawbone.
Dentists speak of gingival recession, gingival inflammation, and gingivitis (gum disease).
Outside clinical contexts, most people just say gums.
