liminal space

Neither here nor-there

A liminal space is a transitional area between two states or places—physically, a hallway, waiting room, or empty parking lot at night; psychologically, the in-between period during major life changes.

The term gained internet currency describing eerily empty places that feel unsettling precisely because they're meant to be passed through, not inhabited: That empty mall gives off serious liminal space vibes.

The uncanny quality comes from encountering stillness where movement belongs.
